Joseph L. Nates

MD, MBA

Dr. Joseph L. Nates is a professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he serves as the Deputy Chair and Patient Safety and Quality Officer of the Department of Critical Care in the Division of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine. He previously served as the Medical Director of the Onco-Hematologic Surgical and Medical Intensive Care Units at MD Anderson Cancer Center, as well as the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit and Neuro-Critical Care Program at Memorial-Hermann Hospital in Houston.
Dr. Nates is the Founder and President of the Oncologic Critical Care Network (ONCCC-R-NET), a global organization dedicated to advancing oncologic critical care research and education. He has been at the forefront of establishing Oncologic Critical Care as a new subspecialty and spreading this knowledge worldwide. To achieve this goal, he has led and co-authored the first two comprehensive oncologic critical care textbooks in both Spanish and English. He has also authored over 400 scientific publications, including peer-reviewed articles, editorials, books, manuals, and book chapters. Additionally, he has established regional and global collaborative networks and organized several Oncologic Critical Care symposiums.
In recognition of his contributions to critical care, Dr. Nates was awarded the title of Master of Critical Care Medicine by the American College of Critical Care Medicine in 2018. The same year, he received the International Master of Critical Care Medicine award from the Chilean Society of Critical Care and Emergency Medicine for his global contributions to the development of Oncologic Critical Care.
In 2022, Dr. Nates became the Founding President of the Global Oncologic Critical Care Society.

Dr. Dereddi Raja Reddy is currently an Associate Professor of Critical Care and Clinical Faculty in the Department of Critical Care, Division of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center since 2019.

Prior to this appointment, he was an Assistant Professor and Faculty at Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Pulmonary Critical Care Sleep Medicine. He was a Director of Medical Education, Associate Program Director for IM Residency and Critical Care Fellowship Programs.

Eduardo D. Bruera

Dr. Bruera obtained his medical degree from the University of Rosario in Argentina. He trained in Medical Oncology and in 1984 relocated to the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, where he directed the clinical and academic palliative care programs until 1999. In 1999, Dr. Bruera joined The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he currently holds the F.T. McGraw Chair in the Treatment of Cancer and is the Chair of the Department of Palliative Rehabilitation and Integrative Medicine. He served as the medical director of the outpatient Supportive Care center for 15 years until 2018.

Andrés Laserna

Dr. Andrés Laserna is a board-certified anesthesiologist currently completing fellowships in critical care and cardiovascular anesthesiology at Stanford University. He holds a master's degree in clinical investigation from the University of Rochester, where he also completed an anesthesiology residency research track focusing on perioperative outcomes research.

Dr. Laserna's research is dedicated to identifying and addressing mechanisms of disparities to enhance perioperative health among minority populations. Prior to his residency, he worked at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, studying pain and sedation management at the end of life.

Currently, at Stanford, he is developing strategies to improve cultural awareness in end-of-life care in the ICU.

Elie Azoulay

Dr. Elie Azoulay is Professor of Medicine, Specialty Pulmonary Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine, at the University of Paris-Cité and Faculty of Medicine, and head of the critical care department at the Saint Louis Hospital, Paris.

Dr. Azoulay has coordinated and directed several research groups, including the French FAMIREA Study Group aimed at improving the effectiveness of communication with family members of intensive care unit (ICU); the GRRR-OH research group for the management and outcomes of acute respiratory failure in critically ill immunocompromised patients; and the Nine-I study multinational collaborative group working on immunocompromised patients. His main lines of scholarly inquiry surround acute respiratory failure in immunocompromised patients, non-invasive mechanical ventilation, hematological malignancies in the intensive care unit, and other hematological emergencies. Most of his publications have been seminal studies in the discipline of intensive care medicine, especially in the areas of critical care of immunocompromised patients and ethics. He has published 502 articles, 121 reviews, 40 editorials, and 53 letters, which have been cited 69,257 times, with an H-index of 138 (Google Scholar).

Dr. Azoulay served as Editor-in-Chief of Intensive Care Medicine. Under his leadership, the journal’s impact factor grew to the highest in its history, placing it at the top of journals in the field of critical care medicine. He has also served as editor in many other journals, and is in the advisory board of the Lancet respiratory Medicine.

He is currently the President of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM).

Kathleen is the inventor of the Vollman Prone Positioner that was on the market from 1997-2011, making it easy and safe for turning critically ill patients prone.

Kathleen’s knowledge base is expansive. She has presented, published and consulted nationally and international on acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), prone positioning, sepsis early recognition and management, early mobility, reducing health care acquired infections and pressure injuries, nursing professional development, patient safety and work culture.

Marion Piñeros is a medical doctor from the Universidad el Rosario in Colombia and Master of Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London.
Before working at the International Agency for Research on Cancer she worked for one year at the Programme for Action on Cancer Therapy (PACT) from the International Agency of Atomic Energy (IAEA) and fourteen years at the National Cancer Institute in Colombia, where she led the public health group, being strongly involved in cancer surveillance and control.
Her main interest has been the production, dissemination and use of information for cancer control.
She has advocated for a clear understanding among stakeholders of the role of PBCR in cancer surveillance and has contributing to descriptive epidemiology studies of cancer in different areas.
She leads the IARC Regional Hub for Cancer Registration in Latin America, providing and coordinating training, tailored support to cancer registries as well as fostering networks and data dissemination for cancer control in the countries of the region.

She completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she also obtained a master’s degree in clinical and translational research. Dr. Tolcher then completed a combined fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Surgical Critical Care at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

She spends most of her time working clinically at the bedside, supervising, and teaching both Obstetrics & Gynecology and Anesthesiology residents. Sheila Nainan Myatra

Sheila Myatra is a Professor of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India. She is the immediate Past President of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM) and the Chair of the Intensive & Critical Care Medicine Committee of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA). Additionally, she serves as the Past President of the All India Difficult Airway Association (AIDAA).

She is actively involved in various committees including the Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SCC) Research Committee and COVID guidelines committee, and she is a Steering Committee Member of the Asia Pacific Sepsis Alliance (APSA). Sheila is also among the 14 international airway experts on the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) difficult airway guidelines and the PUMA guidelines (Project for the Universal Management of the Airway).

Her research interests encompass hemodynamic monitoring, airway management, and sepsis. She is credited with developing a new test in hemodynamic monitoring called the “tidal volume challenge” (CCM 2017).

She delivered the William C Shoemaker Honorary Lecture at SCCM 2023 in San Francisco, USA. In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the prestigious 2023 ESICM Honorary Membership at ESICM Lives in Milan and the European Airway Management Society (EAMS) Honorary Membership in 2022. Sheila was awarded FCCM in 2015 by the American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) and FICCM in 2013 by ISCCM.

She serves on the editorial board of several journals, including Anaesthesia, Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia, Journal of Critical Care, Anaesthesia Critical Care & Pain Medicine, Trends in Anaesthesia and Critical Care, Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology, Indian Journal of Anaesthesiology, and Intensive Care Medicine (past Editorial Board member).
